The Passion and Crucifixion

Palm Sunday

Oil on canvas. 100 x 89cm.

I have tried to imbue this painting of Palm Sunday with a carnival atmosphere.

Christ, on the far left, is seated on a donkey. He smiles lovingly at the Pharisees, in their golden carriage, as he holds out his hand to receive their tired and reluctant palm offering.

The Pharisees sre wearing eighteenth century powdered wigs both to denote the legal system they serve, and to suggest an eighteenth century corruption and worldliness.
