The Resurrection

The Resurrection

Oil on canvas. 125 x 115 cm.

The mountain range behind the risen Christ is an allusion to the Old Testament notion of ‘God's Mountain’ where he met his prophets. The ‘God-On-High’ who looks down on his people far below.

This understanding of a remote, but caring God is transformed by Christ, who has lain underground in a tomb and rises now to the level of the valley. This is ‘God-Among-Us’, living with and in us.

The soldiers too are in a process of transformation. They press themselves against the edges of the canvas, furthest from Jesus, as an awareness of Christ's presence awakens within them.
